A New Year, New Challenges
By Sylvia
There’s something about the start of a new year that makes you pause for a moment.
After the Christmas sparkle fades and the decorations are packed away, there’s that quiet space where you start thinking, “Right then… what’s next?”
For me, being part of Treading the Bored isn’t just about learning lines or stepping onto the stage (although I do enjoy that!). It’s about people. It’s about the friendships that grow when you spend Tuesday evenings laughing, problem-solving, and occasionally wondering why we chose that particular script.
Over the years I’ve worked in youth development and coaching, and one thing I’ve always believed is that people flourish when they feel supported, heard and encouraged. Theatre has a wonderful way of doing that. It builds confidence quietly. It gives people space to try something new. It helps you discover strengths you didn’t realise you had.
As Secretary, I see another side of the group too — the planning, the organisation, the gentle nudges and reminders that keep everything moving forward. It might not be glamorous, but it matters. Every rehearsal, every production, every successful performance is built on teamwork behind the scenes.
This year brings new challenges for us. New productions to choose. New members to welcome. New ideas to try. There will be moments of uncertainty — that’s part of any creative journey — but I’m excited about what lies ahead.
What I love most about Treading the Bored is the sense of belonging. It’s not about being perfect. It’s about showing up. Supporting one another. Sharing the nerves before a show and the smiles afterwards.
If you’re thinking about joining us this year, whether on stage or behind the scenes, I’d say this: come along. You’ll find warmth, encouragement, and a group of people who genuinely care.
Here’s to a year of new challenges, shared laughter, and making a difference — together.
